One Campaign Idea Before the Asset List.

A B2B campaign needs one idea before it needs an asset list. Formats multiply an argument. They cannot invent one. If production starts with sizes, you will ship a kit of consistent emptiness.

Asset factories feel productive. Folders fill. Channels get “covered.” Buyers still cannot repeat what you stand for.
What counts as an idea
An idea is a specific stance on a buyer problem that can travel across placements without collapsing into features. It is not a tagline decoration. It is not a color system. It is not “innovation.”
Test: can a salesperson use the idea in a cold conversation without the ad? If no, it is not ready.
The correct order
- Market and job: who must change their mind, about what.
- Idea: the sharp stance.
- Proof allowed: what you may show.
- Expression rules: how the idea flexes by channel.
- Asset list: only the formats the media plan actually buys.
If step five comes first, you are decorating a vacuum.
How to kill weak ideas early
Put three candidate ideas in front of sales and one skeptical customer advisor if you can. Ask which one they could defend. Discard clever lines that collapse under a follow-up question.
Write the idea as claim, tension, and proof
A usable campaign idea states what the buyer should believe, why the current situation makes that belief matter, and which approved evidence can support it. This short structure exposes ideas that are only slogans. It also gives reviewers something specific to challenge.
Let media jobs create the asset list
Search may need a concise promise that continues on the landing page. Social may need a self-contained problem frame. Video may need one memorable tension and a clear brand role. Build only the expressions the approved media plan can use, then document what must remain constant across them.
A new format should solve a placement problem. It should not exist because a production checklist had an empty row.
What a strong idea cannot fix
A strong idea will not fix a product nobody needs. It will not overcome illegal or unproven claims. Idea discipline still prevents wasted craft.
Questions, answered
How many ideas should a quarter hold?
Fewer than teams think. One primary campaign idea, maybe one secondary test. A zoo of ideas is usually indecision.
Who owns the idea?
A named senior owner across marketing and sales input. Ideas by committee become porridge.
Do we need a big brand book first?
You need enough brand truth to stay consistent. Waiting for a comprehensive brand book while campaigns ship randomly is avoidance. Develop both in proportion.
Can AI generate the idea?
AI can propose angles. Humans must choose based on market truth and proof permissions. Unowned AI ideas become generic fast.
